Category: Community Alert

Status (Contact MSW for an update): Unchanged

Location: Raicoast, Middle Ramu

Information Received: 18/01/20 at 2000hrs, Lighting Phenomenon

Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds.

This phenomenon that people are seeing over Raicoast and in Middle Ramu is the effects of strong North-West winds and cloud movement into PNG atmosphere from down South.

Recently, there have been Bush fires down south in Australia. The hot air generated by the Bush fire will rise and create an updraft that condenses. As a result we get thunderstorm clouds building up an imbalance in the negevetive electrons in the atmosphere with the positive electrons on earth. The result is an electrical discharge which is the continuous lighting produced every night.

Expect to see more lighting until nature balances itself. In the meantime, there is nothing to be concerned about. Enjoy the spectacular view.
