An Asian businesswoman was arrested and charged early this month for selling beer publicly during the liquor ban in Madang Province. She is Guan Liang Qin also known as Belinda, 45, of Fujian Province, China.
She was charged for breaching the ban with three counts of selling beer during the ban period and obstructing police. She was released on police bail of K3000.
Madang police commander Inspector Ben Neneo advised that although the ban was having an effect on business houses that had acquired licenses to trade alcohol, the ban was having a positive impact on the social aspect of it.
Since the ban was enforced in the Province and notices issued to liquor outlets in Madang, Ramu and Karkar Island, there has been a decrease in the crime rate. Some shops have had liquor removed from their shelves and locked away.
He said, “I appeal to all liquor outlets and shop owners to respect authority and the rule of law in conducting business. “Police will not hesitate to apply the rule of law on anybody who thinks otherwise on the liquor ban which is made for the good of everybody.”
The weekend was relatively peaceful at Nabasa and surrounding areas near Divine Word University, Madang Technical College and Maritime college however, there was still the regular weekend noise from the nearby settlements.
Even so, it has brought about a positive outcome to Madang with young people taking part in cleaning up litter from the road sides and public bus stops giving a new facelift to the overall appearance of the town.
